Who Was Vedavati?

Vedavati is the daughter of Sage Kushadhavaja, a Brahmin who is a devotee of Lord Vishnu. She was raised with the Vedas teachings of piety and wisdom. She has grown up with the unbroken devotion of Lord Vishnu and Sage Kushadhwaja always wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu. To marry Lord Vishnu, she committed herself to strict penance and meditation. After her parents died, she returned to the forest to complete her penance. She meditated to marry Lord Vishnu with strong determination, leaving all her comforts and desires.

Vedavati and Ravana: The Fateful Encounter

When she was meditating upon Lord Vishnu, she was spotted by King Ravana (the arrogant and powerful king of Lanka) who was enchanted with her divine aura and beauty. Ravana approached her for the marriage but she rejected her proposal firmly as she was only devoted to God Vishnu. Ravana did not accept her rejection because of his lust and arrogance. Ravana tried to violate Vedavati’s sanctity by his intoxicated power.
In some scriptures, it is mentioned that he grabbed her hair to get revenge. Feeling dishonored Vedavati cursed Ravana that she would return and become the cause of his destruction and death. After her disgrace, Vedavti prayed to the God of Fire (Agni) and immolated herself. 

Vedavati’s Rebirth as Sita

According to many scriptures, it is considered that Vedavati was reborn as Goddess Sita who later became the daughter of King Janaka when King Janaka found her in a furrow while plowing the fields. To become the reason for Ravan’s death, she was destined to marry Lord Rama. After marrying Lord Rama, Maa Sita was abducted by Ravana and started the war between Lord Rama and Ravana which later became the reason for Ravan’s death. This fulfills the curse of Vedavati.
