History and Mythological Significance of Rahu Paithani Temple

According to the Skanda Purana, the demon Rahu performed penance to Lord Shiva at the Seoligad and Nawalika rivers. By this, the establishment of this temple takes place. The region is known as Rath Kshetra, which originated from the Rashtrakuta mountain. The name paithani is believed to have originated from Rahu’s Gotra—paithinasi.
According to the legends, Adi Shankaracharya established this temple. It is believed when he was visiting the Paithani village, he sensed the strong influence of Rahu in the villages, by which he initiated the construction of Rahu Pithani Temple.
Another legend suggests that the Pandavas built this temple during their Swargarohini Yatra (journey to heaven).

Rahu in Hindu Mythology

Rahu is one of the nine planets (navagraha) in Hindu mythology. According to the Hindu scriptures, during the Samudra Manthan, the demon Svarbhanu disguised himself as a Devta to get Amrit. When he was exposed to Lord Vishnu, he cut off his head, but he had already consumed the sacred Amrit and became immortal, by which his head became Rahu and his body became Ketu. To get revenge, Rahu swallowed the sun and moon, causing an eclipse.
