Chhath Puja is a strong and spiritual Vedic celebration honouring Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya (Goddess Usha). It is mostly celebrated in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and portions of Nepal, reflecting India's historical devotion to nature, water, and cosmic energy. What distinguishes Chhath is that it is the only Hindu festival in which both the rising and setting sun are honoured with strict rituals, environmental cleanliness, and community engagement.┬а┬а

The Story Behind Chhath Puja

There are several stories regarding this, but Chhath Puja's origins date back to the Vedic era.
It is thought that kings and sages formerly worshipped the sun to gain longevity, health, and vigour.
Chhath Puja is said to have been conducted by Draupadi and the Pandavas to restore their lost kingdom and wealth.
Another myth holds that after returning from exile to Ayodhya, Lord Ram and Sita observed a fast and prayed to the Sun God, making it a festival of thanksgiving and new beginnings.
During this time, Chhathi Maiya, Surya Dev's consort, is also revered. She is thought to grant children protection, long life, and excellent health.┬а

The 4 Days of Chhath Puja Rituals

1. Nahay Khay (First Day)
It falls on Saturday, October 25..
The event starts with a sacred bath in ponds or rivers.
The devotee (known as Vrati) cooks a satvik meal of lauki (bottle gourd), rice, and chana dal
The meal is taken once and cooked with bronze or clay utensils on a wood or cow dung fire.
2. Kharna (Second Day)
It falls on October 26, Sunday.
Devotees follow a strict fast without water from sunrise until sunset.
After sunset, the devotee offers Chhathi Maiya kheer cooked with jaggery and rice, roti, and bananas and consumes them.
This marks the beginning of a 36-hour nirjala fast, observed till daybreak on Usha Arghya.
3. Sandhya Arghya (Third Day)
It falls on October 27, Monday.
Devotees stand waist-deep in water to give arghya as the sun sets.
Thekua, sugarcane, bananas, turmeric root, coconut, diyas, and seasonal fruits are all found inside the soop, or bamboo basket.
Folk tunes, bhajans, and group prayers on roofs or riverbanks fill the air.
4. Usha Arghya (Fourth Day)
It falls on 28 October, Tuesday.
The last ceremony happens before dawn, when worshippers bring water and prasad to the sun as it rises.
The fast is over after Arghya, and everyone shares prasad with family, friends, and guests.
This is the end of Chhath. Thank you, healing, and peace.┬а┬а
