Margashirsha Amavasya: Importance and Timing

On November 30, 2024, the fast of Margashirsha/ Darsha Amavasya will begin at 10:29 a.m. and last until 11:50 a.m. on December 1, 2024. Devotees have been urged to mark their calendars for this Saturday, making sure they are prepared for the fast dedicated to Lord Krishna, strengthening the religious significance of the occasion even more.

Significance of Darsha Amavasya in Hindu Tradition

Darsha Amavasya is crucial for ceremonies in remembrance of the departed. According to Hindu scriptures, Chandradev is the most prominent Navgraha. It is thought that those who worship the moon on this day would have good fortune, wealth, and spiritual awareness. It is also connected with knowledge, purity, and good aim.

Rituals for Ancestor Worship: Pitra Puja and Tarpan

Darsha Amavasya ceremonies are devoted to Chandra Dev. According to the Vishnu Dharma Shastra, Darsha Amavasya is an auspicious day for worshiping the ancestor. It is extremely auspicious to do shradh rituals, til daan, panda tarpan, and other offerings.
Shradh rituals and Pitru Dosha are performed on Darsha Amavasya to cleanse sins and promote good health, happiness, and wealth. Its objective is to achieve Moksha. The moon is invoked and worshipped by chanting mantras, devotion to deities, reverencing gods and goddesses, and performing puja ceremonies.
Offering prayers and performing Shraadh rites are regarded as extremely auspicious. Tantric pujas and black magic rituals flourish when demonic powers or energies are at their peak. Goddess Kali is invoked to increase riches and protect against disease. This is the optimum time to perform Kal Sarpa Dosha pujas. Natives with Pitru Dosha in their horoscopes can also do Tripindi Shradh. It minimizes delays and reversals in life.

Benefits of Fasting on Darsha Amavasya

The Moon rules the mind and emotions, as well as the plant and animal kingdoms. Worshipping the moon on Darsha Amavasya Day brings peace of mind and happiness. It contributes to less delays and reversals in life.
People often kindly request the moon to break the cycle of birth and death and bring good fortune. Fasting begins in the morning of Amavasya tithi and continues until Darsha Amavasya. It concludes with the viewing of the moon.

The Vrat Katha: The Story Behind Darsha Amavasya

The Vrat Katha is associated with the Samudra Manthan, an event involving asuras and devas. In the narrative, Durvasa cursed Indra and the devas, causing them to lose their abilities. The Asuras, seeing the circumstance, took advantage of it. They defeated the Devas, but the Devas relied on Lord Vishnu to persuade Asuras to support Samudra Manthan.
Afterwards the Asuras agreed with the churn of the eternal ocean to get amrit, the heavenly nectar of immortality. Later, Lord Dhanvantari arrived with a pot carrying a medicine, and Jayanta, Indra's son, fled with the amrit to avoid the Asuras from stealing it.

Step-by-Step Guide for Performing Amavasya Rituals

Fasting on Darsha Amavasya begins in the morning and continues till the moon appears. After seeing the moon, many break their fast. They begin puja arrangements as soon as they finish their morning responsibilities, such as bathing and dressing appropriately. The idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are worshipped. People recite the Amavasya Vrat Katha and worship the Chandra Yantra to promote peace and prosperity.

The Legend of Acchoda and the Birth of Pitru Puja Rites

Barhishadhas are souls who live on Somras. Som denotes happiness and harmony, but Ras means juice. Acchoda, a member of the Barhishadha clan, was devastated that she had been deprived of her father's love and care. When she screamed for aid, the Pitrus asked her to take rebirth as King Amavasu's daughter.
Acchoda grew up in a royal family, thus she received love and attention from her father. She arranged for a Pitru puja to express her thanks to the Pitrus. Since then, the custom of offering shraadh has emerged.

How Darsha Amavasya Brings Prosperity and Spiritual Blessings?

Amavasya or Amavasi refers to the lack of visibility of the moon in the sky. The first night occurs in the first quarter of the lunar month. In symbolic terms, the interval between Amavasya and Purnima represents the moon's gradual waking and transcendence into wholeness. On this auspicious occasion, Hindus perform tarpan for the departed souls.
