Kumbh Mela is known as one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world. These gatherings showcase the richness of India, Hindu Tradition, and devotion. The Kumbh Mela rotates every 12 years to these cities - Prayagraj (Allahabad), Nashik, Haridwar, and Ujjain. This year, the Kumbh Mela is particularly significant as it has come after 144 years, known as Maha Kumbh, and the mela is organized at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Maha Kumbh History

According to the Hindu Scripture, the story of Maha Kumbh is connected with the Churning of the Ocean, popularly known as Samundra Manthan. The story starts when the devtas (gods) and asura (demons) conflict who seek immortality. To achieve immortality, they decided to churn the oceans and extract immortality nectar (Amrit). In this process, Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and the serpent Vasuki was used as a churning rope. When the churning began, several divine treasures emerged from the ocean like the moon, the goddess Lakshmi, and the poison halahala. To save the Universe from the Poison Halahala, Lord Shiva drinks the poison. When the nectar of immortality (kumbh) appears, a battle begins between the Gods and Demons to attain the nectar. During the battle, a few drops of nectar spilled at these places named - Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain. That’s how these sites became the sacred place of Maha Kumbh and believed to hold divine energy.

Maha Kumbha Mela Important Tithis

The auspicious dates of Kumbh Mela are decided according to the alignment of celestial bodies, particularly the Sun, Moon, and Jupiter. These dates decide whether the devotees can take the holy dip (snan) in the sacred Ganga. Devotees believe that this holy dip cleanses their sins and helps them to achieve spiritual liberation (moksha). Here are the most significant dates of Maha Kumbh Mela 2025:

1. Makar Sankranti - 14 January, 2025
Makar Sankranti is a festival of harvesting and the joyful relationship between humans and nature. On this day, devotees take the first holy dip in the Ganga River and worship God Surya, God Vishnu, and Goddess Laxmi. Taking a bath on this holy day is considered to bring prosperity. This day marks the transition of the Sun into the zodiac sign of Capricorn (Makara).

2. Paush Purnima - 13 January, 2025
Paush Purnima is the full moon day of the Paush month. This day is also an auspicious day for the holy dip. This day symbolizes purification and penance. Devotees believe taking a bath on this day can purify the soul and open the way for spiritual progress.

3. Mauni Amavasya - 29 January, 2025
Mauni Amavasya also known as Maghi Amavasya is a sacred occasion dedicated to honor the predecessors and ancestors. On this auspicious day, devotees perform Pitru Dosha puja, offer Arghya to Surya Dev, and take a holy dip in the sacred river. This day is also known as the Silent New Moon Day. Devotees also observe Maun on this day and meditate to attain spiritual enlightenment. Devotees believe that on this day, the sacred rivers are imbued with divine nectar (Amrit).

4. Basant Panchami - 3 February, 2025
Basant Panchami marks the beginning of the Spring season. People worship Goddess Saraswati (the Goddess of knowledge, music, the arts, and education) on this day. A holy dip in the sacred rivers is believed to remove ignorance and bestow wisdom.

5. Maghi Purnima - 12 February, 2025
Maghi Purnima is the full moon day of Magha month and it is considered very auspicious for a holy snan. Taking a holy bath on this day is believed to remove sins and attain liberation (Moksha). It is believed that if devotees donate food, clothes, and money to the needy then it can attract good karma.

6. Mahashivratri - 26 February 2025
Mahashivratri is one of the most significant days to honor Lord Shiva. This day marks the union of Shiva and Parvati and celebrates their divine love. It is believed that Lord Shiva performs Tandava (the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction). This day is celebrated as the last day of Magha Month and the end of Maha Kumbh Mela.
