History of Kumbh Mela
The first record of the Kumbh Mela dates back to King Harshavardhana's reign, around 2000 years ago. This custom has weathered the test of time, including under the dominion of India's successive conquerors. It was regarded as a common gathering place for the many sects of Hinduism prevalent throughout the country. Hiuen Tsang of China, one of the earliest explorers to visit India, mentions the Kumbh Mela in his works, offering an eyewitness report of over half a million people congregating in Allahabad during the Hindu month of Magh (January - February) for this sacred occasion. Following the popularisation of the snan and darshan rites by many Hindu saints, the number of visitors rapidly grew, making it the greatest spiritual festival in the history of the world.

Story behind Kumbh Mela
According to Hindu scriptures, Amrita is the potion of immortality, created during the churning of the ocean known as Samudra Manthan. The heavenly creator, Lord Brahma, directed the demigods, or Devas, to churn the Amrita with the assistance of the devils, or Asuras. When the Asuras learned of the Devas' plan, which they refused to discuss with them, they pursued them for twelve days. The four Kumbh Mela sites are thought to be the areas where drips of Amrita dropped from its Kumbh, or pot, while being carried by a Deva, protecting it from the Asuras. The four drops landed on Prayag, Haridwar, Nashik, and Ujjain, imbuing the locations with supernatural characteristics. The four holy rivers flow through these places and serve as the site of the bathing rite. It is thought that during the Kumbh Mela, the waters of the Sangam transform into Amrita, which has heavenly characteristics and helps pilgrims get closer to salvation.

Staycation guide for Kumbh Mela 2025
During the Kumbh Mela, devotees build temporary shelters, such as tents, on the fairgrounds. It is critical to arrange your accommodation in advance, as Prayagraj’s hotels get extremely overcrowded owing to the massive number of devotees that arrive throughout the two-month period. Prayagraj’s schools are closed during this time and are turned into temporary shelter houses, health care centres, and other key service centres to guarantee that the Mela runs smoothly and without severe disruptions.
