Story Behind the Shivratri Festival

The Mahashivratri is one of the holiest Hindu festivals of the Hindu religion and this day signifies the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. As per the Hindu Mythology, Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati on this auspicious day for the second time. It is a celebration of the divine union and is referred to as “The Night of Lord Shiva”. Another story related to Shivratri is that during the making of the universe, Lord Shiva reincarnated himself as Lord Rudra by the grace of Lord Brahma. It is also said that Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance of creation, destruction, and preservation when he got the news of Maa Sati’s immolation. This cosmic dance practice was called Rudra Tandav among the devotees.
According to Drik Panchang, during the Amrit Manthan, the poison that came out of the ocean had the power to destroy the world. Then, Lord Shiva drank the poison and saved the whole world from destruction. So, Mahashivratri is observed by the devotees of Lord Shiva and thanked him for saving the universe.

Shivratri Puja Vidhi: Step by step

Cleaning and Decorating: You must clean the house and Puja area. Decorate the place with flowers and rangolis.
Offering Puja: Set up a small altar with a Shiva Lingam or an image of Lord Shiva. Light a lamp and incense in front of Lord Shiva.
Offerings: milk, honey, ghee, curd, water, bael leaves, flowers, incense, and a diya (oil lamp).
Arghya Offering: Chant mantras "Om Namah Shivaya" dedicated to Shiva.
Bathing: Do the Abhishekam Bathe the Shiva Lingam sequentially with water, milk, curd, honey, and ghee.
