Mauni Amavasya also known as Maghi Amavasya is a sacred occasion dedicated to honor the predecessors and ancestors. Maghi Amavasya or Mauni Amavasya falls in the Magha month, characterized by the disappearance of the Moon from the sky. On the day of Mauni Amavasya, people worship Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu with their predecessors and ancestors. The devotees perform several rituals and fasting (Maun vrat) to commemorate the day of Mauni Amavasya. People perform Pitru Dosha puja, offer Arghya to Surya Dev, and also take a holy bath in the Ganga River. Charity, donations, and pujas are organized in several parts of the country as it is considered meritorious. Spiritual Significance of Mauni Amavasya:

The Hindus attach great religious and spiritual importance with the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. The Amavasya is widely known and respected for performing all puja rituals, including Pitru Dosha, Hawan, Puja, and even Pind Daan if people wish in the memory of their predecessors or ancestors. But performing events such as engagement, marriage, griha pravesh, or mundan is not considered auspicious. The name тАЬMauniтАЭ means silence, and the Mauni Amavasya day is dedicated to the practice of тАЬsilenceтАЭ. The devotees take an oath (sankalp) of silence (mauna vrata), and the Mauni Amavasya day is dedicated to practicing silence, furthermore, experiencing spiritual elevation. The devotees make a vow to practice silence for a whole day. It is also believed that the day of Mauni Amavasya is considered very auspicious to take a тАЬsnanтАЭ or holy dip in the holy river, especially the Ganga River.

Story associated to Mauni Amavasya:

The Mauni Amavasya is one of the most important days to bathe at the Kumbh Mela. The word тАЬMauniтАЭ means silence, and it is observed on the first day of the new moon. The story that revolves around Mauni Amavasya is about the Brahmin Devaswami and his widowed daughter, who faced several challenges to find a suitable match. The daughter of Devaswami was under a curse that she would become a widow in the future. Worried for her daughter, Devaswami went to a sage and he said that the curse would only be lifted by doing Soma Puja, and elaborated about her to the Brahman. Then the next day, Devaswami sent his youngest son and daughter to the Soma DhobinтАЩs home who was a virtuous washerwoman. Devaswami sent his son and daughter to the washermanтАЩs home to help her with her chores. The brother and the sister helped Soma diligently hide their real identities. Soma was also impressed by their work and later discovered the reason for their presence. Soma along with the brother and the sister, travelled to the Kanchipuram to lift the curse. After reaching there, Soma performed a puja with proper rituals under a Peepal tree, afterwards, Lord Vishnu was impressed and blessed Soma with powers to help DevaswamiтАЩs daughter lift the curse. The purpose of the story was that selfless acts of service result in good outcomes.

How to celebrate Mauni Amavasya in 2025?

The Mauni Amavasya is a day of spiritual introspection, cleansing, and honoring the ancestors. Observing Amavasya Day as a silent day not only helps in the purification of speech and mind but also helps foster inner peace and spiritual growth. By following simple rituals and rules like meditation, charity, and silence, individuals can make the most of this day. It is meritorious to observe this sacred day with discipline and devotion to attain spiritual progress and mental clarity. One can celebrate this day by following some simple rules:
Holy Bathe: On this day, various devotees celebrate Mauni Amavasya by taking a holy dip in the Ganga River. If it is not possible for someone to take a holy bath in the river then they can add a few drops of Ganga water to the regular water, and then take a bath at home.
Mauna Vrata: After bathing, some people also believe that taking a vow of silence for the entire day helps in the rejuvenation of speech and mind. The vow starts in the morning and continues until the end of the entire day. The next day, people conclude the Mauna Vrata after taking the holy bath and break the fast by first chanting the name of God.
Perform Rituals: There is a saying that performing rituals on this auspicious day like charity, donations, and pujas are considered meritorious and bring serenity and prosperity in life.┬а

Mauni Amavasya - Puja Vidhi 2025?

On this auspicious day, you must follow the Puja Vidhi step by step:
1. Morning Bath: Devotees must wake up early and take a holy bath in the Ganga river. If going to the Ganga River is impossible, devotees can mix the Ganga water (Gangajal) in their bathing water and bathe.
2. Silence Fast (Maun Vrat): It is a tradition to have Maun Vrat the whole day to purify speech and achieve mental peace.
3. Tulsi Parikrama: Devotees should do Tulsi Parikrama 108 times after bathing.
4. Offerings to Ancestors: Offer water and pray to your Ancestors for their peace, as this day is very auspicious for Pitra Dosh remedies.
5. Donating: Donating foods, clothes, etc to the needy as it is considered auspicious on this day.┬а

Mauni Amavasya Prasad

Some special dishes are made in the Prasad of Mauni Amavasya:
1. Panchamrit: A mixture of milk, yogurt, honey, ghee, and sugar is made as Panchamrit and distributed as Prasad.
2. Sesame Sweets: Sweets like til kot, sesame ladoos, and chikki are made as prasad.
3. Jaggery and Rice: Many people also distribute jaggery and rice as Prasad.
