Kerala's most colourful harvest festival, Onam, commemorates the return of the legendary King Mahabali, a cherished monarch whose reign stood for equality and wealth. Onam 2025 is set to be a spectacular cultural celebration, featuring flower carpets (Pookalam), opulent feasts (Onasadya), snake boat races (Vallamkali), and traditional dances (Kaikottikali & Pulikali).
This blog delves into:
The legendary origins of Onam
The significance of the customs of the 10-day festival.
1. The Mythological Significance of Onam
a) The Vamana Story King Mahabali and Avatar
According to Hindu legend, King Mahabali, also called Maveli, was an asura who ruled Kerala in a just and prosperous manner. His growing might worried the Devas, who looked to Lord Vishnu for support. Vishnu, disguised as a little Brahmin named Vamana, requested "three paces of land." With Mahabali's approval, Vamana expanded to cosmic dimensions, covering the earth and heavens in two steps. Mahali offered his head for the third step to get Vishnu's permission to visit his people once a year, known as Onam
b) Why Onam is Celebrated for 10 Days
From Atham to Thiruvonam, the celebration lasts ten days, with each day having its own rituals.
Pookalam, or flowery rangoli, begins with a single ring on the first day.
Every day, new flower layers are added from Chithira to Anizham.
Cultural events such as Thiruvathira Kali (women's dance) are performed from Thriketa to Pooram.
Uthradom: The feast's last preparations.
Thiruvonam: The culmination, which includes the arrival of Mahabali, the Onasadya feast, and festivities.
