Tara Jayanti 2026 – Date, Significance, Puja Vidhi & Vrat Rules

The Hindu Devi Tara (Mother Tara) is considered one of the ten Mahavidyas of Hinduism, and her appearance is celebrated annually on this auspicious day.  On this day, devotees perform pujas, prayers, and other spiritual practices in hopes of obtaining blessings from Goddess Tara.  It is believed that by worshipping Goddess Tara on her day of divine appearance, the worshipper will remove fear, negativity, and other difficult obstacles from their life, as well as gain wisdom and the inner strength needed to persist through difficult times.

Who Is Goddess Tara?

The name Goddess Tara means “the one who ferries us to the other side of the river.” This description is analogous to how a boat carries you across a river. Goddess Tara assists her devotees in crossing the ocean of worldly problems and suffering.

In the Tantric traditions, Goddess Tara is considered to be very powerful and will also help in the transformation of the devotee’s mind. Her form resembles Goddess Kali, symbolising strength and protection, yet she is also associated with knowledge and divine speech. She represents both fierce protection and nurturing compassion.

The Sacred Legend Behind Tara Jayanti

According to a popular legend, during the cosmic event of Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), Lord Shiva consumed the deadly poison Halahala to save the universe. The poison was so powerful that it rendered him unconscious. At that critical moment, Goddess Tara appeared, took Lord Shiva in her lap, and nursed him like a mother, neutralising the poison’s effects.

This story symbolises Tara as the life-giver and protector. According to the teaching of the mission, whenever we find ourselves facing a toxic situation or deep suffering in our lives, Divine Mother always comes to our aid with her love and healing energy.

Rituals/Worship

In observance of Tara Jayanti, devotees wake early, bathe, and put on clean clothes before performing puja to the Goddess. An image or idol of Goddess Tara will be placed in the designated area for worship. Flowers (especially red and blue) will be offered, along with incense, lamps, and sweets.

The mantra “Om Hreem Streem Hum Phat” should be chanted during puja, as it is deemed highly auspicious. Some of those who practice at an advanced level may perform special Tantric rituals; however, simply praying with true devotion during puja is sufficient to seek her blessings.

Most devotees will do nightly puja, reciting hymns honouring the Goddess.

Devotees believe that worshipping the Goddess will remove fear, enemy problems, mental stress, and negative influences from their lives. She can fortify the mind and give you the strength and clarity to live your life confidently.

If one has an overwhelming amount of emotion or is lost in their life, through the worship of Tara, one will receive the balance and direction they are searching for in life. Tara can also help facilitate the inner awakening of each individual and to develop spiritual awareness through her grace.
