The Stories of Kartika Purnima

There are several traditional stories associated with Kartika Purnima. Each story highlights the importance of loyalty, integrity, and good behaviour.
According to the Shiva Purana, three demon brothers named Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali, and Kamalaksha created three magical cities known as the Tripuras. They became arrogant and annoyed with both humans and gods. On Kartika Purnima, Lord Shiva, assisted by Lord Vishnu, destroyed all three cities with a single arrow. The day is known as Tripuri Purnima, which signifies the victory of good over evil.
Another story claims that Lord Vishnu protected the valuable Vedas and all living creatures from a huge flood on this day by adopting the form of a fish, or Matsya Avatar. This story is a testament to how the faith and protection of God always help people through challenging times.
Kartika Purnima (the birthday of Lord Kartikeya, also known as Skanda or Murugan) is celebrated in South India as well. It is common during this festival for devotees to sing hymns, have processions in honour of Lord Kartikeya, and temples will be decorated.
The story tells it that after Lord Shiva defeated the demon Tripurasura, the gods rejoiced by illuminating Kashi (Varanasi) with thousands of lights. Since then, people have celebrated Deva Deepawali by lighting diyas along riverbanks, especially on the ghats of the Ganga.┬а

Main Kartika Purnima Rituals

Holy Bath (Kartik Snan).
Before sunrise, devotees bathe in holy rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, or Godavari. Taking a bath in the early morning, known as Kartik Snan, is believed to wash away all sins while bringing peace, prosperity, and health to one's life. Many take a plunge and chant mantras as part of their cleansing experience.
Lighting of Lamps (Deep Daan).
In the evening, line the banks of rivers, temples and your entire residence with rows of diyas (lamps). Deep Daan, the lighting of lamps, signifies the victory of light over darkness, illuminating heavenly energy all around you. This time of year, the ghats in Varanasi are very beautiful, with thousands of diyas lighting up the entire city.
Fasting & Worship
On Kartika Purnima, many devotees fast the entire day and worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Goddess Lakshmi by singing bhajans and doing aarti at their temple, before decorating and worshipping the Tulsi plant. This event also culminates the ceremonies of Tulsi Vivah, making this a special time for prayer and devotion.
Charity and Donations
On Kartika Purnima, charitable activities are regarded exceedingly auspicious. Followers bring food, clothes, lights and money to the needy. People believe it is very spiritually significant to offer either sesame seeds, a little cash or a cow, and will receive heavenly favours for doing so. The idea is that you are building our own good karma and attracting good energy by helping others on this day.
Temple Visits and Pilgrimages
A great number of followers visit pilgrimage towns such as Varanasi, Haridwar, Rameswaram and Tirupati to receive blessings. In Odisha, the mythical Boita Bandana festival is held, where people float little boats in rivers or ponds to commemorate ancient sea merchants who used to sail for prosperity and success before returning.┬а
