Married women in many Indian states celebrate Karwa Chauth, a significant festival. The two components that make up the term Karwa Chauth are "Karwa," which means "earthen pot," and "Chauth," which means "the fourth." In the month of Kartik, this celebration is held on Poornima, the fourth day following the full moon. During this all-day event, married women fast from sunrise to moonrise and pray for their husbands' long lives. In northern and western India, especially in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, married Hindu and Sikh women actively honour the day. 

What is the History of Karwa Chauth?

According to folklore, Veeravati, Vedsharma Brahmin's wedded daughter, chose to fast on Karka Chaturthi to ensure her husband's long life. Despite the fasting rule that forbade her from eating, she felt restless and couldn't stand the hunger. Unaware of the consequences, her brother created an illusion and showed her the moonrise by shining a lantern beneath a tree, causing her husband to vanish. Following this episode, Veeravati fasted for twelve months before regaining her spouse.

Rituals of Karwa Chauth

Take a shower as soon as you wake up.
Women in certain regions eat Sargi before the day begins.
They prepare by wearing new traditional clothes and fasting throughout the day.
Women create a variety of tasty dishes, including halwa, poori, and veggies.
They worship Chauth Mata in the evening, before sunset, and serve the cooked meal to the Goddess while reciting the vrat-katha.
They offer arghya to the sun before it falls.
When the moon rises, they first view it, then offer arghya to it, and then look at their husband's face and break their fast with water.
After breaking their fast, people can have a sattvik meal.  

What is the Significance of Karwa Chauth?

The occasion, which takes place on the fourth day of Karthik Krishna's Chandroday Vyapini, is extremely significant for married women, as it is a lovely reflection of the marital knot. They fast and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in honour of the occasion from dawn to moonrise. According to Hindu tradition, the only way for a person who is fasting to break the fast, also known as the Karak Chaturthi fast, is to offer Arghya to the moon. The fast must be broken by drinking water.
