Married women in many Indian states celebrate Karwa Chauth, a significant festival. The two components that make up the term Karwa Chauth are "Karwa," which means "earthen pot," and "Chauth," which means "the fourth." In the month of Kartik, this celebration is held on Poornima, the fourth day following the full moon. During this all-day event, married women fast from sunrise to moonrise and pray for their husbands' long lives. In northern and western India, especially in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, married Hindu and Sikh women actively honour the day.┬а

What is the History of Karwa Chauth?

According to folklore, Veeravati, Vedsharma Brahmin's wedded daughter, chose to fast on Karka Chaturthi to ensure her husband's long life. Despite the fasting rule that forbade her from eating, she felt restless and couldn't stand the hunger. Unaware of the consequences, her brother created an illusion and showed her the moonrise by shining a lantern beneath a tree, causing her husband to vanish. Following this episode, Veeravati fasted for twelve months before regaining her spouse.┬а
