Veni Madhav Temple History:

According to Legends, In Treta Yug A Demon known as Gajkarna created havoc in the three worlds. All the devotees went to Lord Vishnu and prayed him to protect them from Gajkarna. To find a solution Lord Vishnu sent Narada Muni to meet Gajkarna. When Narada Muni went to meet Gajkarna singing his glories he saw that Gajkarna is suffering from some disease. Then he suggested Gajkarna take a bath in the Holy bath at Triveni Sangam. Gajkana agreed and went to take a holy bath in the Sangam. All his diseases got cured, seeing this he thought that if a holy bath in the Sangam can cure all his diseases then taking the Holy River with him can fulfill all his desires.

Hence he drank the whole waters of the Three Holy Rivers. As a consequence not even a single drop of water was remaining in the world. All the inhabitants went to Lord Vishnu and prayed to him to save Triveni Sangam. Being concerned about his devotees, Lord Vishnu flew with Garuda to Prayagraj. He fought with Gajkarna for three days starting on Tuesday. On the last day of the fight i.e. on Thursday Lord Vishnu cut off Gajkarna’s head with Sudarshana chakra. The water of Triveni Sangam flowed out from the stomach of the dead Gajkarna and returned to the original place.

When Lord Vishnu was going back to Vaikuntha Dham all his devotees prayed to him to stay in Prayagraj to protect Triveni Sangam. Lord Vishnu granted the wish of his devotees and expanded himself into twelve forms and circled Triveni Sangam to protect it. Veni Madhav Mandir is the Main Mandir among the twelve forms of Madhava.
