Who is Goddess Chamunda?

Goddess Chamunda is a fierce and powerful form of Chandi Maa who is the Divine Mother, Mahadevi. She is the fearsome manifestation of Kaali Maa (Goddess Mahadevi). She is also known as Chamundeshwari, Chamundi, or Charchika. Goddess Chamunda was born as a destroyer of evil forces and a protector of righteousness. The name of Goddess Chamunda is taken from two demons Chanda and Munda whom she killed. Goddess Chamunda is associated with Devi Parvati, Kali, and Durga.

Origins and historical background of the Chamunda Chalisa

The Chamunda Chalisa contains 40 verses which refer to the Hindi word (Chalis means 40). It is written in a way that makes it easy to learn, chant, and recite during the prayers or spiritual practices. Chamunda Chalisa has its roots around the worship of Goddess Shakti. The Chamunda Chalisa is strongly associated with the legend of Goddess Chamunda. According to the Markandeya Purana, Goddess Kali manifested as Goddess Chamunda to kill the demons Chanda and Munda. After defeating the demons, Chamunda's name is given to her, which is the combination of demon names. This battle symbolizes the triumph of Good over evil and shows the goddess as the ultimate protector of dharma and destroyer of adharma. It is most recited in Navrating and also in personal prayer to get the Goddess’s blessing.

This opening verse praises Goddess Chamunda as the universal mother, the ultimate source of hope and salvation. It acknowledges her divine role in liberating devotees from the sufferings of the world, emphasizing her boundless grace and compassion.

1. Jai Chamunda Jai Jai Kali, Tum Ho Jag Ki Adbhut Maali.

Meaning:

Best Time: Early morning 4:00 AM to 6:00 AM (Brahma Muhurta)
In the evening during sandhya kaal (twilight) is also a good time.
The most auspicious time is the nine days of Navratri.
