Jayadeva and the Composition of Gita Govinda

The Gita Govinda is divided into 12 chapters. Each chapter is further broken into one or more prabandhas, for a total of twenty-four. The prabandhas consist of couplets organized into eights, known as ashtapadis. The poem also elaborates on Heroine's eight moods, known as the Ashta Nayika, which have inspired numerous music and artistic works in Indian classical dance.

Gita Govinda in Jagannatha Temple Tradition

Each night in the sacred Jagannatha temple, the Gitagovinda song of Jayadeva is performed in the manner of Odissi music, a custom that dates back to Jayadeva's lifetime. Kerala musicians have converted the ashtapadis into a musical genre known as sopana sangeetham, which is played at temples. The Guru Granth Sahib contains several of Jayadeva's songs.

Summary and Spiritual Interpretation of Gita Govinda

The work depicts Krishna's love for Radha, the milkmaid, his faithlessness, and his return to her, and is interpreted as a metaphor for the human spirit wandering from its real loyalty but eventually returning to the God who created it.
