Why did Khatu Shyam cut his head and how did Barbarik become Khatu Shyam ji?
The origin of Khatu Shyam ji is believed to be from the war of Mahabharata. Barbarik was going to fight on behalf of Corvo in the Mahabharata war. Barbarik was the son of Ghatotkacha. He always helped the weak people and at that time the Kora's army was weak. Barbarik used to do penance for Lord Shiva and Mother Durga. Through penance he got three impenetrable arrows, whose target never goes blank. About which Lord Shri Krishna knew. Therefore, to stop Barbarik, Shri Krishna went to him in the guise of a Brahmin and asked him to donate his head. Barbarik never refuses anyone who asks for it, so he agreed but he expressed a wish that he wanted to see his divine form and watch the war. Krishna accepted this demand. Barbarik meditated on Lord Krishna the entire night of Falgun Shukla Ekadashi and donated his head to him on Dwadashi. Barbarik ji's head was buried in Khatu Nagar (present-day Sikar district of Rajasthan state), hence he is called Khatu Shyam Baba.
