A sacred celebration of menstruation, fertility, and Shakti — unfolding at the mystical Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam.

 What Is Ambubachi Mela?

Ambubachi Mela is one of India’s most unique and spiritually potent festivals, celebrated annually at the Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hills in Guwahati. Unlike any other temple event, this Mela marks the menstruation cycle of Goddess Kamakhya, the embodiment of feminine energy and fertility.
Unlike mainstream narratives that stigmatize menstruation, this festival glorifies it as a symbol of divine creation. Ambubachi reclaims this biological process as sacred — and in 2025, it returns in the third week of June (exact dates to be announced based on the Hindu lunar calendar).

The Mythological Significance: Why Kamakhya Bleeds

Kamakhya Devi is revered as the Yoni Peeth — the site where the womb and genital organ of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen when Lord Shiva carried her burning body across the skies in grief. Out of the 51 Shaktipeeths, Kamakhya is the most sacred, representing the source of creation itself.
The sanctum sanctorum of the temple contains no idol. Instead, it houses a naturally formed rock cleft, symbolizing the Goddess's womb. During Ambubachi, this yoni is said to menstruate, and the temple closes for three days to honor the process — an act of supreme reverence toward the divine feminine.

A Festival of Pause and Purity

For three days, the Kamakhya Temple ceases all spiritual activities:
No pujas or darshans are conducted.
Pilgrims and locals avoid farming, cooking, or performing sacred rites.
The temple is symbolically 'resting' — just as a woman would during her cycle.
This ritual pause connects Goddess Kamakhya with Bhudevi (Mother Earth), acknowledging that the Earth too has a womb and needs rejuvenation.

The Grand Reopening: Day 4 of Darshan

On the fourth day, the temple reopens with grand celebrations:
Devotees queue up for darshan from pre-dawn.
The "Rakta Bastra" (red-soaked cloth symbolizing menstruation) is distributed as prasadam.
Live pujas, havans, and homas are conducted with chants echoing through the hills.
Receiving darshan during this phase is believed to clear karmic debt, aid fertility, and bless devotees with abundance and inner clarity.

Kamakhya Temple: Mystical, Tantric, and Divine

This ancient temple is one of India’s foremost centers of Tantric worship. Here’s why it’s deeply revered:
It’s a Siddha Peeth, known for fulfilling wishes through tapasya (austerity) and sadhana (spiritual discipline).
Aghoris, Tantriks, and sadhus gather here seeking siddhis (spiritual powers).
The temple’s architecture is a fusion of Assamese and Bengali styles, with a dome resembling a beehive and sculpted panels of deities and nymphs.
A staircase leads devotees down to the yoni-shaped rock, constantly bathed in underground spring water — signifying purity and continuity of life.

 Who Attends the Ambubachi Mela?

Naga Sadhus, Tantriks, Aghoris – seekers of deep spiritual and occult knowledge.
Kalpwasis – devotees who observe intense spiritual disciplines during this period.
Pilgrims and Foreign Seekers – drawn by the temple’s mysticism and energy vortex.
Spiritual seekers believe Kamakhya is a “Shakti Circuit,” where the energy of creation flows in its rawest form — best accessed during Ambubachi.

Ambubachi Mela 2025 – Tentative Dates

Likely between June 22nd to June 25th, 2025 (final tithis to be declared by the temple).
Stay updated through Utsav’s official channels for puja packages and date confirmations.

Spiritual and Scientific Parallels

Interestingly, scholars and yogis believe that the Ambubachi Mela syncs with Earth’s vibrational cycles — creating a cosmic alignment. It’s said the energy at Kamakhya Temple intensifies during this time, amplifying intentions, mantras, and prayers.
Modern feminists and spiritualists alike hail the Ambubachi Mela for:
Dismantling period stigma
Reclaiming womanhood as divine
Celebrating Shakti in its most primal form
