Shri Kamakhya Devi Temple – A Sacred Siddha Peeth of Tantric Worship

Shri Kamakhya Devi Temple, located on Nilachal Hill in Guwahati, is counted among the 52 Shakti Peeths as per the Puranas and is considered a twin to the Kashi Kamakhya Devi Temple. In this temple, the idol of the goddess is enshrined as the Shri Mahamudra Yantra, making it a unique Siddha Yantra Peeth where Goddess Kamakhya is venerated as the deity of Tantra.

The temple’s most significant festival is the annual Shri Ambubachi Yoga Festival, celebrated every June during Ardra Nakshatra. During this time, the garbha griha (sanctum) of Mata Shri remains closed for three days. Before the doors close, a white cloth (safed vastra) is offered to the Shri Mahamudra Yantra, and when the doors reopen, this cloth is distributed as prasad. After the three days, the garbha griha is reopened for the Mahabhishek and annual darshan of the Shri Mahamudra Yantra.

A central ritual of the festival is the performance of 108 parikramas (circumambulations). The poojit laal vastra (consecrated red cloth) and the holy water from the abhishek (ritual bath) are highly regarded in religious and Tantric practices for their significance in alleviating suffering and enhancing spiritual protection.

As described in the Kamakhya Tantra:

"Yoni-mantra shariraya Kunjavasini Kamada.
Rajasvala Mahateja Kamakshi Dhyeyatam Sada."

Inside the garbha griha, devotees will find idols of Shri Kodhan Bhairav Ji, Shri Bhadra Kali Ji, Shri Hanuman Ji, and Shri Chausath Yogini Ji, surrounded by the Ashta Bhairavas of Kashi. In the temple courtyard, one encounters sacred deities including Shri Dhriṣhṇameshwar Jyotirling, Shri Dhannajay Kupa, Shri Pratyangira Devi Ji, Shri Jivit Samadhi, and Shri Akhand Dhuna.
