Holika Dahan 2025: Date and Shubh Muhurat

Holika Dahan is one of India's most lively celebrations, celebrating the triumph of good over evil. In 2025, we shall celebrate on Thursday, March 13th. The date is always calculated using the lunar calendar. The ideal time to commemorate this event, or the Shubh Muhurat, is between 11:26 pm and 12:30 am on March 13th.

History and Significance of Holika Dahan

With Holika Dahan the night before, we, the people of India, prepare to celebrate Holi the next day. So, if the Holika Dahan is conducted on March 13th, the following day will be celebrated as Holi. People spray colors on each other, smothering their playmates with colored powder. The day of Holi is considered as winter ends and spring begins. Other names for the Holi Festival include Dol Purnima, Manjal Kuli, Rangwali Holi, Shigmo, and Dhulandi.
During Holika Dahan, a vast throng gathers around a burning effigy. The fire is kindled as soon as the evening arrives, symbolizing the death of the bad spirit. Holika Dahan centers on the story of Holika and Prahlad. Hiranyakashipu, Prahlad's father, was a strong ruler who achieved godlike abilities. He was fortunate that no one could hurt or take his life. So he called himself a god and insisted that everyone worship him. But the king's own son refused to worship him since he is a devout disciple of Lord Vishnu, the supreme entity.
Knowing this, Hiranyakashyapa became enraged and sought to murder his son. However, he failed and turned to her sister Holika for assistance. Holika, who was immune to fire, had to persuade Prahlad to enter the fiery pyre, which would lead to his death. But Lord Vishnu arrived at the same time, and to their dismay, their scheme failed, and Vishnu saved Prahlad, but Holika was burned in the fire, despite being fireproof. Following that, Lord Vishnu was given the title of "The Protector of Good," and Holika Dahan was performed one day before Holi to symbolize the triumph of good over evil.

Rituals and Customs of Holika Dahan

To celebrate Holika Dahan, people gather and start a bonfire with large quantities of wood, dried leaves, or other flammable materials. A crimson-colored cloth, known as a रंगीन चादर, is placed at the base of the bonfire as a symbol of purity. The entire community comes together to participate in the festivities.
A symbolic effigy of Holika is made and placed on top of the bonfire. People often gather around the fire, walking around it three to seven times in a clockwise direction. Some even reenact the story of Holika to add to the excitement of the event. Devotees also pray and offer their wishes to Lord Vishnu, singing mantras such as "ॐ होलिकायै नमः" (Om Holikayai Namah), which means "I bow to Holika," symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Other mantras like "ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय" (Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya) are chanted during this time.
Participants also wear 5 Mukhi Rudraksha Malas to show their spiritual devotion. During the rituals, sacred items like ghee, sugar, barley, sesame, salt, and other offerings are thrown into the fire as a sign of sacrifice. After the bonfire, people perform puja with their family and community, seeking blessings from the fire and using its flames as a symbol of purification.
Many believe the ash from the Holika Dahan bonfire holds spiritual power. People collect the ash and apply it to their foreheads or sprinkle it around their homes to cleanse the atmosphere of negative energy. Finally, sweets and traditional delicacies such as गुजिया, मठरी, and पुए are served to those attending the celebration.
