Phalgun Amavasya Vrat Katha
The auspicious significance of Phalgun Amavasya can be traced back to the time of Samudra Manthan. Once Maharshi Durvasa was outraged with Indradev, and all the Gods and Goddesses that reside in Indrapuri. Out of rage, he cursed them and took away all their spiritual powers. Hearing this, the devil God wanted to take this situation to their advantage. He decided to conquer Indrapuri and rule over God's. This made all the Gods and Goddesses helpless. They sought to Lord Vishnu, for help.
After hearing all the problems faced by Gods and Goddesses he decided to help them. As a solution, he asked all the Gods and the Demons to churn the ocean of milk to extract тАЬnectar of immortalityтАЭ out of it. After this when they were hopeful to get fruitful result, it turned to despair.this was because of Jayant (Indra devтАЩs son), who snatched away the тАЬnectar of immortalityтАЭ and flew away.
Meanwhile, there was a turmoil created among Gods and Devils. This turmoil turned into a war. This war persisted for 12 days.In order to stop this war, Lord Vishnu took the Avatar of Mohini (The beautiful female avatar of Lord Vishnu). The drop dead gorgeous look of Mohini was enough to sway away the attention of the demons. Mohini tricked the demons, and took away all the nectar and gave it to the Gods. However, during the war, a few drops of this nectar fell in the holy rivers of Ujjain, Haridwar, Prayag and Nasik.
