Radhashtami is the most important of all the festivals devoted to Bhagwan Vishnu or any of his avatars. Radhastami, also known as Radha Ashtami, is the day on which Radha, called Radharani, the Queen of Vrindavan, appears. Born in Barsana (Uttar Pradesh, India), she is the heavenly consort, closest friend, and most cherished devotee who submitted to Hari's lotus feet. The event takes place on Ashtami Tithi in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month (September-October). On this day, followers, particularly those of the Vaishnava sect, fast and pray to her with Shri Krishna. They also participate in several spiritual activities, such as reciting or debating Krishna Katha, particularly the pastimes of Krishna and the Gopikas. According to literature such as the Bhagavad Purana (Srimad Bhagavatam), hearing the pastimes of Srimati Radharani and Krishna on this day is more beneficial than completing elaborate Vedic Yajnas and Fire sacrifices.

Meaning of ‘Radhashtami’
'Radha' in Sanskrit denotes 'prosperity'. According to the Puranas, particularly the Shirmad Bhagavatam, Radha is the Shri's primary, internal pleasure potency called "Hladini". She represents divine, auspicious, opulent, and spiritual qualities. The Shiva Purana and Brahma Vaivarta Purana mention Her inseparability from the Lord. She is known as Jagat Janani, the Mother of All Universes. She was born in Barsana, the area originally governed by King Vrishabhano (Vrishabhanu). Srimati Radharani arrived around five thousand years ago, when Shri Krishna came to our world to fulfil his pastimes.
Story behind birth of Radharani
On a half-moon night in the month of Bhadra, King Vrishabhanu went to the Jamna to bathe and was immersed in a golden aura, the golden aura of true love. It was coming from a lotus, with a newborn girl standing on its whorl. When the monarch returned to the palace with the infant, Queen Kirtida was overjoyed. She was also surprised to learn that the girl was blind. On the other hand, Yashoda, Krishna's mother, discovered that her best friend Kirtida had a kid. She instantly arrived to visit the girl and her baby Krishna. When baby Krishna crawled up to the cradle, pushed himself up, and peered at the baby girl, she magically opened her eyes, much to everyone's surprise.
According to the Krishna Katha (10th Canto or Skanda of Srimad Bhagavatam), Radha and Krishna are always together in Vaikuntha, the Shri's residence. When Brahma asked the Bhagwan to remove bad rulers and races from the planet, the Bhagwan obliged. However, Radha was heartbroken to see her lover go. So she desired to emerge on Earth, blind, until she saw Bhagwan first.
