When Shree Krishna and Balaram ji were old enough, they were transferred from the royal palace in Mathura to Guru Sandipani's ashram. They lived and served the Guru with other disciples in the Gurukul, where they were trained to be future warriors and rulers. This is the first time Shree Krishna met Sudama.

Krishna and Sudama's Friendship:

Krishna and Sudama were childhood buddies who studied in the ashram of their teacher, Sandipani Muni. While Krishna was the prince of the Yadava kingdom and destined to be the next king, Sudama came from an impoverished Brahmin household. Despite their disparate upbringing, their friendship blooms, connected by the purity of their hearts and the delight of company.

They split apart as they got older, with Krishna becoming a prominent protagonist in the events of the epic Mahabharata and eventually controlling the country of Dwaraka. Sudama, on the other hand, had a basic life of poverty and struggled to make ends meet. Sudama's wife, observing their grave financial circumstances and her husband's devotion for his buddy Krishna, pushed him to contact Krishna and ask his assistance one day. Sudama was initially hesitant, humiliated by his poverty and unwilling to seek for favours from his boyhood buddy, who was now a powerful ruler.

Despite his doubts, Sudama decided to pay Krishna a visit with a modest gift of  rice wrapped in a piece of cloth, as it was the only thing he could afford to give to his buddy. When he arrived to Krishna's castle in Dwaraka, the guards were hesitant to let him in because of his modest look, but when Krishna learned that his good friend Sudama had come to greet him, he hurried out to greet him. Sudama was enthusiastically greeted by Krishna, who treated him with tremendous respect and compassion. He escorted Sudama into the palace, cleaned his feet, and offered him a seat. Krishna's love for Sudama was based not on his exterior wealth or prestige, but on the intimate friendship they had.

Sudama is hesitant about presenting his humble gift since he is overwhelmed by Krishna's generosity. But Krishna's persistence and genuine gratitude for the battered grains make Sudama happy. The wonderfully shows that the feeling behind a gift is more important than its monetary worth.

An Unwavering Bond:

Krishna then spotted Sudama attempting to conceal something. Sudama was hesitant to reveal the genuine cause for his visit when questioned. Krishna, being all-knowing, recognised Sudama's intents and inquired directly about his family and their well-being. Sudama opened out and recounted his family's troubles after realising Krishna knew all and yet accepted him warmly. Without Sudama having to ask, Krishna lavished him with money, prosperity, and all the comforts imaginable.
