Temple History:

During the reign of Aurangzeb, the Mughals were destroying Hindu temples across the country. However, when his soldiers failed to destroy the Nagvasuki Temple, Aurangzeb himself came to Prayag to destroy the temple. 

The story states that as soon as Aurangzeb took out his sword to destroy the temple, the ferocious form of Nagvasuki descended on Earth and the tyrant failed to scratch even the wall of the temple. 

The story behind how Lord Nagvasuki came to reside at this place has been stated in the Padma Purana. During the Samudra Manthan or churning of the ocean milk, he was tied around the Sumeru mountain and used as a long rope. This event caused a lot of injuries to his body and he was exhausted. 

Therefore, he went to Mandrachal Mountain to rest but could not do so since his body was burning up. Lord Vishnu advised him to go to Prayagraj and bathe in the cool water of River Saraswati. Following this instruction, Lord Nagvasuki reached the said place and was successful in resting his body. 

When he was ready to leave after getting his fill of rest, the sages and demigods requested him to reside there. He agreed to do so but on two conditions. 

He stated that a devotee will be considered to have completed their darshan only when they take a dip in the Triveni Sangam. He must be worshiped on the day of Naga Panchami during the Sawan month. It is believed that the idol at the temple was established by none other than Mansaputras of Lord Brahma. Apart from Lord Nagvasuki, the temple also has deities of Lord Ganesh, Parvati Devi, Lord Shiva, and Bhishma Pitamah. 

Architectural Marvels:

As you approach the Nagvasuki Temple grounds, you will be charmed by the beautiful edifice that combines traditional features with contemporary design. The temple's façade has elaborate carvings, elegant pillars, and magnificent sculptures of snakes symbolising their significance in Hindu mythology. The sanctum sanctorum holds the deity of Nag Vasuki, which is draped with garlands and surrounded by contributions from worshippers.

Hundred of people visit Prayagraj every year on their pilgrimage. It is believed that the pilgrimage is not complete unless one visits the Nagvasuki Temple and takes a bath in the Triveni Sangam. To reach the temple, you can take several routes depending on your preference. The nearest airport is Bamrauli and it is located on the outskirts of Prayagraj city. If you plan to travel by rail then the Prayagraj Junction is the closest stop. National highways and state highways are also accessible by the pilgrims making the journey.

The best season to visit the temple is during the winter. The months of September to February seem to be ideal. Remember that there are a few rules and regulations to follow on the temple premises and everyone should pay attention to them:

1. One has to follow the dress code while entering the place of worship. 

2. Respect the customs and the co-pilgrims when you are on the temple grounds. 

3. It is prohibited to smoke or chew betel leaves inside the temple. 

4. The darshan timings are from 10:30 AM in the morning to 4:30 PM in the evening.

Festivals, Puja and Ritual:

The temple comes alive during numerous festivals, bringing a great number of worshippers and tourists. Nag Panchami, a festival dedicated to snake worship, is widely celebrated at Nagvasuki Temple. Devotees bring milk, flowers, and vermilion to the sacred statue in exchange for protection and blessings from the heavenly snake.

The Nagvasuki Temple is one of the only two temples in the world where one can get rid of the Kaal Sarpa Dosha. The worship of Nagas (snakes) has been popular since the Vedic ages and people still continue to offer their prayers.
