Trimbakeshwar Temple: Where Legends and Spirituality Converge

Sri Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient Hindu Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the five Jyotirlingas in Maharashtra. It is also regarded as the only place where the Pitru Dosha Puja is performed. The Jyotirlinga at the Trimbakeshwar Temple is special as it is said to be covered by a jeweled crown, which is said to be from the age of Pandavas. Trimbakeshwar itself is considered to be a holy place. Its sacredness comes from the fact that it is the place of the tri-sandhya Gayatri. It is also where Lord Ganesha was said to be born.

Trimbakeshwar Online Puja 

Temple History:

The legend of Gautam Maha Muni is associated with the Trimbakeshwar Temple. During a massive drought, Gautam Rishi offered prayers to the Lord Varuna, the God of Water. Pleased with his prayers, Lord Varuna gave him a tank with an endless supply of water. Gautam Rishi used this tank to help the other Rishis residing there. 

However, the other Rishis got jealous soon enough and prayed to Lord Ganesha to send a cow to the fields which can later die and bring the wrath of Lord Shiva upon Gautam Rishi. This malicious plan was successful and Gautam Rishi was bound to perform penance to receive the forgiveness of Lord Shiva. 

Pleased with the penance, Lord Shiva ordered Ganga to come down to Earth. The river came down and Gautam Rishi trapped it in a kund. The river is now known as Dakshin Ganga or Godavari. Upon the request of Gautam Rishi, Lord Shiva agreed to take abode here and turned into a lingam. 

The Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple was constructed at the spot by Nana Saheb Peshwa in the 18th century. It was later extended by Shreemant Rao Saheb.

Significance:

The temple has a unique lingam representing Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. The Trimbakeshwar Temple is located 28 km from the city of Nashik and is dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva. The temple houses the Trimbakeshwar Shiva Jyotirlinga which has three faces and each of the faces is an embodiment of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Mahadev. It is the only Jyotirlinga that is found in a cavity. Due to the presence of water, the Jyotirlinga has started to erode away. This is considered a sign of the erosion of faith among humanity.

The three eyes of the lingam are meant to represent Sun, Moon, and Fire. Worshipping the lingam is akin to worshiping all three Gods at the same time. It is a common belief among the pilgrims that anyone who visits the temple will attain salvation after death. Pilgrims are also encouraged to take a dip at the Kushavarta Kund (Pond) which is the source of River Godavari. All the mortal sins are washed away after one dip in the waters. The Kushavarta Kund is also the starting point of the auspicious Kumbh Mela which takes place at the spot once in 12 years. 

Trimbakeshwar Temple's architectural excellence is a monument to India's rich cultural legacy. The temple complex contains sanctums dedicated to several deities, such as Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and the Nandi bull. Trimbakeshwar Temple's proximity to the sacred Godavari River is one of its distinguishing features. The river is thought to have descended from the Brahmagiri Hills, making it an important component of the spiritual environment of the temple. Devotees frequently take holy dips in the Godavari River before praying, viewing it as an act of purification and spiritual refreshment.

Rituals and Puja:

Trimbakeshwar Temple is well-known for its lively festivals and ceremonies. Thousands of devotees travel to the temple during the Maha Shivaratri festival, which is devoted to Lord Shiva. Other festivals, such as Nag Panchami and Shravan Somvar, are also celebrated with zeal. The temple priests carry out different rituals and ceremonies, which add to the atmosphere of spiritual devotion and heavenly connection.

Kaalasarp Puja: This puja is performed by people who are facing difficulties due to a change in planetary position between Rahu and Ketu. The devotee is supposed to take a bath in the holy Kushavarta pond and ask for forgiveness for any sins committed. The puja itself is made towards Naaga (Cobra). 

Narayan Nagabali Puja: This is also known as Pitru Dosha Puja and is meant to remove any curse from the family. The puja lasts for three days. 

Mahamrityunjay Puja: This is a worship of Lord Shiva and is meant to bring good health and long life to the devotee. 

Rudrabhisheka Puja: In this puja, the lingam is bathed with "Panchamrut' which is basically a mixture of milk, ghee, honey, curd, and sugar. This puja is believed to remove all evil deeds from one’s life and bless the devotee with abundance. 

Tripindi Shradh Puja: This ritual helps a lost soul to get eternal peace. The elder son of the family is generally the one to perform this puja. 

Kumbh Vivah Puja: This puja is also done to remove Dosha that occurred by the Mangal planets. Mostly Manglik brides and grooms perform this to resolve the issue of delay in marriage.
