According to a well-known myth and sacred text, the Hindu deity Shiva dismissed the value of food, calling it a cosmic delusion. His wife, Devi Parvati, a manifestation of Universal Shakti, became unhappy upon hearing this. She concealed herself from Lord Shiva's view and, along with her, vanished all sources of food and nourishment from the land in order to demonstrate to him the importance of food to life. After realizing the value of food, Shiva begged his wife Parvati, who is also known as Annapurna and holds a begging bowl, for food as alms (the giver of food and nourishment).
