Kalighat Kali Temple

Kalighat Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India where the little finger of Devi Sati's Right foot had fallen during Lord Shiva's destructive dance (Tandav), as described in Hindu scriptures. Some historical accounts trace its origins back to the 15th century, while others suggest it could be even older although the exact origins of Kalighat Temple are not precisely known. 

The architecture of Kalighat Temple reflects traditional Bengali style, characterised by its red terracotta artwork and sloping roofs. The main garbha griha (sanctum sanctorum) houses the idol of Goddess Kali, adorned with garlands, sindur, and other offerings by devotees.


Kalighat Temple is dedicated to Maa Kali, the fierce and powerful Hindu deity associated with destruction and creation. Kali is worshipped here in the form of "Bhavatarini," meaning the redeemer of the universe. The name "Kalighat" itself means "the abode of Kali.". Many believe that seeking the blessings of Goddess Kali at this sacred site can bring protection, prosperity, and liberation from worldly sufferings.
